We all know that you can be a teacher with a Master of Education (MEd) degree, but that profession is just a tip of the iceberg of possibilities for MEd graduates. Working our way from the closest to teaching to the most unique careers possible with an MEd degree, first up is the Master of Science in Reading degree offered online from the School of Education at University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY). This degree is especially for those who either have lapsed certification or no certification and want to work in literacy settings rather than a classroom. The University website declares that this degree can elevate careers such as “literacy volunteers, international students, parents, private school providers, after school program coordinators, counselors in prison settings” just to name a few possibilities. The Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College at Arizona State University boasts an MEd degree with two different concentrations that can open up many different career opportunities. The MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in either Autism Spectrum Disorders or Applied Behavior Analysis can lead to careers in speech pathology, social work, psychology, counseling or therapy for example.

Moving on to more unconventional possibilities, the University of Arkansas’ Global Campus has a completely online, 33 credit hour MEd in Human Resource and Workforce Development Education degree that prepares graduates to work specifically with adults as management and training specialists with the goal of increasing employee satisfaction and productivity within the companies for which they work. In the field of science, the next degree is for professionals who desire to enhance their skills in public education and leadership. The Science and the Public EdM degree program offered collaboratively through the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education and the Center for Inquiry is an interesting option. This degree leads to career possibilities in museums, zoological and wildlife parks, and science centers. Rather than being a teacher, graduates can be field guides, lead debates, or work in public policy or in the government.

So a Master of Education degree doesn’t always mean you’re slated to be a K-12 teacher. Working with different populations, in different settings–MEd graduates have a world of possibilities.

For some schools it’s all about the grade point average. At Colorado State University’s Global Campus, students of the online Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) are instructed to take an additional three-credit hour course along with the required coursework if their combined undergraduate GPA was 3.0 or lower. The purpose of the class, Fundamentals of Writing and Research, is to help “students entering graduate level programs . . . develop awareness of current and effective research and writing practices.” This simply increases the degree program requirements from 36 to a 39 credits. Gonzaga University also desires a GPA higher than 3.0 for admission into their Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MAOL) degree program, but will allow applicants to “include an explanation of GPA statement” if their GPA is lower than a cumulative 3.0. The MAOL offered online at Lewis University presents on its admissions checklist the requirement of an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, but will grant “provisional admission” to a potential student who can then complete nine credit hours of the Lewis MAOL “program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.”

Other schools require a certain amount of professional experience. Jacksonville University, for instance, recommends a “minimum . . . of at least three years of relevant work experience” but will work on admission with individual prospective students “who show promise for successful graduate work.” Michigan State University also requires three years of work experience for the Master of Science in Management, Strategy and Leadership offered online and “designed for professionals who have earned a bachelor’s degree,” but with the additional caveat that the prior work needs to have been a “full-time managerial experience in a supervisory role.” The Master of Arts in Leadership and Organizational Development at Saint Louis University requires applicants to have the minimum of three years of experience, but also requires that they currently be working at least twenty hours a week. In addition, prospective students must have completed undergraduate coursework in “leadership or organizational theory,” “basic statistics or research methods,” “General Psychology,” and a “business-related” class.

Three years is the minimum requirement for many schools’ online Master of Organizational Leadership degree programs, but for some, such as Quinnipiac University‘s MSOL, the minimum requirement is “at least four years of full-time work experience.” Think you need to have more experience under your belt before you apply? Then look to Saint Joseph’s University‘s Master of Science in Organizational Development and Leadership–they require a “minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 . . . along with 8 years of relevant work experience,” although will accept a GPA of less than 2.8 if “sufficient relevant work experience” of more than eight years is demonstrated.

MBA Degree Length

How long does an online MBA take?

MBA programs vary in length. Answering the question of how long it takes to earn one can be tricky.

Whatever the case may be, completing an MBA program of study, whether on-campus or through the many online programs out there, is a smart choice for your personal and professional life.

There are a few factors that affect the length of your MBA program.

Full Time MBA Program vs. Part Time MBA Program

First, consider how long you want to take to complete your degree. Consider family, work, and all other factors. This will help you determine how many credits you can take at once from the business school without feeling overwhelmed.

A 3-credit class generally requires up to 18 hours of coursework per week. Most graduate schools consider anything less than 9 credits per semester to be part time MBA programs. An accelerated MBA program will be one that includes more than 9 courses per semester. You will be able to graduate in a year or less, but you’ll have to put in a lot more work to earn an accelerated MBA, too.

On-Campus vs. Online Program

The amount of time for an MBA degree varies based on whether you want to study on-campus or online. Taking courses on a college campus works better for some students. However, these classes tend to meet at fixed times. That’s why many working professionals find it easier to get an MBA as online students.

The flexibility offered by online business schools is something that can’t be beat. There’s no commute and no scheduled meet time. You can get an MBA education even while working full-time.

Standard vs. Fast Track

Even if you don’t think you’ll be able to take more than 9 credits per semester, you might want to consider an accelerated master’s degree. Also known as a fast track program, these don’t always require more credit hours of study. However, they might condense semesters into shorter 8-week terms. They might include fewer core course requirements or the ability to start taking classes when you are still an undergraduate as well.

Admissions Requirements

Most MBA programs require the completion of the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Council) test. This doesn’t necessarily add time to how long it takes to get an MBA. However, it does add time before you can even start your degree. This can be significant for people who are interested in completing MBA programs in a hurry!

How Long to Get MBA Online With Dual Degrees

Some full-time MBA programs have other built-in options that you may want to pursue. Are you interested in executive MBA programs? Dual degree programs, like a joint JD/MBA or MPH/MBA? If so, this will add time to your degree completion timeline. However, most MBA students find it well worth the extra effort. There are more career options to choose from when you graduate, after all!

MBA Degree: How Long to Prepare

When considering how long to get MBA online, you’ll want to consider not just the program length but also how much time it will take you to prepare.

We mentioned earlier that you may have to account for time to take the GMAT. It’s important to contact your business school when you apply. They will be able to tell you if the GMAT is a requirement for your degree program. You might qualify for a waiver even if it is. Usually, work experience is necessary for this waiver.

If you’re pursuing an online degree, some admissions requirements might be more relaxed. You may not have to do an interview (or it might be completed over Zoom). Most degree programs, including an on-campus program or even an accelerated one year MBA program online, will require the following:

Letters of recommendation

Transcripts

Resume

Personal essay

It can take more than a year to apply for a business education. It takes time to take the prerequisite tests and meet all the requirements. You need to budget for this time even before you are able to attend classes!

Once you are enrolled, many MBA programs will let you come up with your own course of study. Consider which elective courses will help you earn the graduate degree that best advances your career. Also think about which will allow you to study at your own pace.

While a traditional MBA with few electives or work experiences will take less than two years to complete, it may not be ideal. You might be better off choosing a program that provides you with more job opportunities, networking opportunities, and the ability to pursue dual degrees.

What is the Maximum MBA Length of Time?

How long do MBA programs take?

On average, most online MBA degree programs last about two to three years. Many programs use a cohort approach to coursework. This means that a group of students enter the program together and progress through all requirements together.

The classes have a lock-step format. There is a prescribed order of coursework that must be followed. A lot of the programs that use the cohort model will still allow students to break out of the sequential program. This makes it possible to pursue a more relaxed pace of their choosing.

Other schools that do not use the cohort approach have a wider range of expected completion dates. Again, on average, most students finish in approximately two years. With either method, there are programs that allow students five, six, seven–even up to ten years–to complete their online MBA degrees.

The online MBA programs with the longest completion allowances we discovered in our research are:

Marist College with seven years

Mississippi State University with eight years

University of Nebraska at Lincoln with the longest completion time allowed at ten years.

How Long Does it Take to Earn An MBA Online in an Accelerated Program?

There are plenty of online MBA degree programs that offer accelerated programs.

The average time commitment for many accelerated MBA programs ranges from 18 to 21 months. These programs cater to the professional that wants to get a degree as quickly as possible. Some follow the cohort format, and some do not.

Often these programs are offered to the professional who has a business degree from an accredited undergraduate school. Examples of such schools are:

University of Florida’s Online MBA One Year program

The trend in business these days–both globally and domestically–is a high ethical standard and sound moral compass. Gone are the days when shady businessmen get ahead by any means necessary, and many schools are capitalizing on the ethics approach by grounding their online Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) degree programs in integrity and conscientiousness. From offering coursework focused on ethical leadership to whole programs steeped in the concept of faith and servitude, MOL programs abound with a strong sense of not just leading, but leading well. With many good programs from which to choose, read on or start with our list of the best online Master of Organizational Leadership degree programs to find the best fit for you.

Featured Programs

 <he-editorial-listings class=' mobius-block-el mobius-component' degree='masters' category='business-and-management' subject='business-administration' theme='none' ></he-editorial-listings>

While many schools offer the MOL degree through an online program and even offer many classes with themes of ethics and responsible leadership, faith-based schools–Christian faith schools in particular–are really plugging in to the concept of ethics as it applies to the business world. Montreat College, for instance, declares that their Master of Science in Management and Leadership degree program will develop students’ “critical thinking and strategic planning skills in the context of an ethical, Christ-centered worldview.” Some schools offer a specific faith-focused curriculum that cover ethical issues that organizational leaders must manage. One of the required foundation courses at Charleston Southern University is “Business Ethics from a Christian Worldview,” a class designed to “to equip students to think Biblically about work, business and life.” This course is right in line with Charleston Southern’s approach at academia from a Christian perspective which they call the “Encounter-Engage-Energize model of faith integration.” At Amridge University, students learn to implement “ethical and moral regulations needed to operate in social, religious, and business communities” by taking classes such as “Spiritual Leadership within the Organization.”

And while some schools may be faith-aligned with a curriculum that is shaped by Christian-declared virtues, their approach and required coursework are not overtly religious. The Master of Science in Organizational and Strategic Leadership at Neumann University, a Franciscan institution, is taught with a “values-based perspective” through classes such as “Social and Ethical Responsibility of Leadership.” Jesuit school Creighton University‘s Master of Science in Organizational Leadership online degree is offered through the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. It makes sense then that the Creighton approach is “centered on developing moral and ethical leaders who use their skills to promote social justice, societal and organizational change for a greater and more just tomorrow” with classes like “Communicating and Leading Across Cultures.” And Messiah University a school “committed to an embracing evangelical spirit rooted in the Anabaptist, Pietist and Wesleyan traditions of the Christian Church,” offers a Master of Arts in Strategic Leadership degree that requires coursework that covers topics such as “The Character of a Leader.

So for those looking to lead, follow the path of righteousness–whether specifically faith-based or just centered on good, broad-based values. From any approach, it’s the best way to do business!

Natural Disasters

As of the writing of this article, my home state of North Carolina has been recently battered with not one but two major hurricanes. Florence and Michael, seemingly benign names for the amount of destruction they caused, displaced many and took lives. According to FEMA, research has shown that climate change is fostering an atmosphere that facilitates the creation of these mega-storms, which in turn breeds more force and more staying power than we would have seen from a hurricane from decades past. Hurricane Florence was incredibly slow moving–she sat just on the coast of North Carolina for almost a week without decreasing her wind force significantly, causing a great deal more damage than if she had just barreled through the state. Parts of the coast had mandatory evacuations, and if not for the preparation and assistance from Emergency Management professionals, more lives would have been lost. For the people who had no choice but to remain in the paths of the storm, rescue and assistance efforts were headed up in order to save lives (even our four-legged and feathered friends had emergency management help before, during, and after the storm).

Human-made Disasters

For those of us who remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when the first plane hit the Twin Towers, our lives will be forever changed. Emergency Management professionals put plans together in preparation for when attacks like these occur. For disasters that cannot be halted or averted, the goal is to mitigate and save lives through thorough planning and understanding what can happen in these occurrences. Some disasters, though technically “man-made,” are caused not by devious and malicious motives but by unintentional or negligent human error. There are large-scale hazards events that have the potential to affect millions, such as major oil spills like Exxon Valdez, radioactive hazards like Chernobyl, and wildfires caused by vehicles such as the Carr Fire of 2018. Smaller disasters may seem less serious in terms of overall harm, but are still traumatic to those involved, like engineering disasters such as bridge and walkway collapses, or civil unrest leading to violence caused by power outages or the outcomes of sporting events or trial outcomes.

What You Can Do

If you want to help mitigate loss, save lives, and work towards preventing disasters from striking, working towards your Master of Emergency Management degree online is a smart first step. In fact, the online Master of Emergency Management is one of the most popular master’s degree programs currently being pursued. The coursework is just as rigorous and often taught by the same on-campus faculty, many of whom are still active in the emergency management and disaster preparedness field (and some with pretty amazing credentials). Here’s just a few of the possible trajectories you can aim for after getting your master’s degree in Emergency Management online.

Featured Programs

Environmental Disaster Preparedness

Emergency management and environmental protection go hand-in-hand. The United Nations defines an environmental emergency as “sudden-onset disasters or accidents resulting from natural, technological or human-induced factors, or a combination of these, that causes or threatens to cause severe environmental damage as well as loss of human lives and property.” Think of catastrophic events such as when major oil spills or hazardous materials leaks occur. Large-scale organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assist in these efforts. As an Emergency Management professional, some of your responsibilities could include examining environmental risks and evaluating situations to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards are being met.

Public Health and Healthcare Crisis Management

Natural disasters, infectious diseases outbreaks, bioterrorism, and industrial accidents can have serious and fatal implications. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been instrumental in advocating for and helping to prepare response teams at the state and local level, as well as pushing for policy and unified response plans on a national level. As someone engaged in this line of work, you could participate in behind the scenes preparation, such as training healthcare personnel, constructing emergency plans, and synchronizing communications between relief agencies, government officials, and other key players.

Homeland Security

Although most often associated with national security related to acts of terror, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security potentially covers all aspects of emergency management on a national level, from terrorism to disasters caused by environmental and health crises. A growing trend is to define emergency management as part of the homeland security canopy of influence, and emergency management professionals working within a homeland security capacity do many of the same jobs as emergency management personnel in environmental or public health specialties. Homeland Security provides trainings such as civilian response and responder exercises, and through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides response and recovery efforts.

The four phases of emergency management (as defined by FEMA) are mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery. As a student of a high-quality online Master of Emergency Management degree program, you will learn the skills needed for each phase of an emergency life-cycle.
Getting Started

You can essentially start the admissions process as soon as you are ready (many programs offer rolling admissions or admission deadlines at several times throughout the year). It’s not too good to be true–a good, quality education earned through flexible coursework finished in your time-frame. What is the starting salary after completing a full time MBA. And are the salary increases enough to make online education a good choice? In general, higher education is a smart choice. That’s regardless of whether you’re on campus or if you’re in an online degree.

The average salary for online MBA graduates is $115,000. This figure varies depending on the specific field of study. It also depends on the location and size of the employer.

Those working in large cities and in the financial sector tend to earn more than those working in smaller towns and in other industries. Online programs offer a flexible way to earn an advanced degree. Their graduates are often able to command higher salaries than those with traditional MBA degrees.

Online programs often require less time and effort to complete than traditional programs. This makes them a more attractive option for busy professionals.

Is It Better to Get MBA Online or In-Person?

Deciding whether to get an MBA over the web or in person is a personal decision that depends on a variety of factors.

One key consideration is the amount of time and effort you are willing to invest in your education. An MBA from a distance often requires less time than getting one in person. You can complete coursework at your own pace. Plus, you don’t have to commute to campus.

However, online programs can be more challenging than in-person programs. That’s particularly true if you struggle with technology. Also, you’ll need to make sure you have access to a reliable computer and internet connection.

Another important factor to consider is your learning style. Do you learn best by interacting with classmates and professors in person? Then an online program may not be the right fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re comfortable learning on your own and are motivated to stay on track with assignments, then a distance MBA could be a great option.

The best way to decide whether an online or in-person MBA is right for you? Take time to research programs. Talk to students who have completed them.

Are Online MBA Programs Credible?

One of the biggest questions to address is the credibility of an online MBA program.

It is no secret that online education has become more popular in recent years. Technological advances have made distance learning more accessible and affordable. So more and more students are enrolling in online programs. This trend is even more true when it comes to business-related degrees. The number of MBA grads has almost tripled. An MBA may be the best way to help you meet your career goals.

Are online MBAs respected – and are online MBAs worth it?

The simple answer is yes. Many employers view online MBA programs as being just as credible as traditional on-campus programs. They understand that the quality of an educational program depends on more than just the delivery method.

Instead, it is the curriculum, the professors, and the overall reputation of the school that matter most.

And when it comes to these factors, many of these programs can hold their own against their traditional counterparts.

What Are the Admissions Requirements for MBA Degrees?

Online students must meet the same requirements as other applicants to traditional programs, in most cases.

Most online programs require students to have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional work experience.

Some schools may have different requirements. For example, some schools may require students to submit GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Council Exams) scores. Others may not.

The best way to learn about the admissions requirements is to contact the school directly.

Besides Salary, Why Get an MBA?

Many MBA students enter into the program with the hope of securing a high-paying job after graduation. It’s true that an MBA can lead to a significant salary increase, there are other reasons to pursue this degree.

An MBA provides students with essential business skills. These are in topics such as financial analysis, marketing, and project management. These skills are valuable in any career. That’s true whether you’re looking to start your own business or climb the corporate ladder.

Most online MBA degrees cost less than traditional programs at most business schools. You can often complete an online MBA in as little as two years. The total cost of the program is often much lower than the cost of an on campus MBA. MBA graduates who study online have a lot to gain!

Plus, the flexibility of online learning means that you can continue to work full-time while earning an MBA degree. That’s all while you complete your degree.
An online MBA can offer a number of career benefits, including increased job security, higher wages, and promotion potential. All of these factors together make an Online MBA a wise investment for any ambitious business professional.

Do Employers Care if MBA is Online?

So does it matter where you get your MBA?

To be honest, your employer might not even know you earned an online MBA.

All degrees from online MBAs state that the degree was received from their institution. They don’t specify that it was an online version of the program.

However, you may need to be prepared to discuss your decision to study through a distance learning program. That’s as opposed to a more traditional on-campus program. These conversations come up often in interviews.

Regardless, most employers agree. They admit that as long as the program itself is of high quality it shouldn’t be a deterrent that the degree was earned online. Most employers also are well aware of the online education trend. Look for a school that is reputable. Make sure it also has a physical campus. Of course, it should also have appropriate accreditation through The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Aspiring online MBA students can check with the Graduate Management Admissions Council for this information as well.

Otherwise, employers seem to be more concerned with what you can do for their company than how you completed your MBA degree program’s coursework.

More and more well-known and respected schools offer online MBA programs now. So any hesitation a potential employer may have should be short-lived. An online MBA program can be just as good as an on campus one.

Having completed an MBA program online might even be a draw for some employers. Completing coursework online proves that a graduate is technologically savvy. You would have to understand how to navigate online MBAs in order to be able to complete the MBA program.

Online learning also showcases that a student is self-motivated and driven. It could even show that you have good time-management skills. That’s even truer if you completed the online MBA while working full time. Another benefit of online MBA programs!

Are Online Masters Respected? The Future is Now!

Online learning is nothing new. In 2011, about 6.7 million people took at least one online class. That’s a third of all college students!

But is an online master’s degree respected?

Many traditional residential colleges now have online courses. About a third of them offer full degree programs via the Internet. As online degrees grow more common, employers are forced to embrace them. They are realizing that distance learning can be just as effective as sitting in a classroom. See our list of the Top Paying Master’s Degree Programs to learn more!

Are online graduate degrees respected? That depends. Some employers are behind the times. They do not understand distance learning.

The good news? There is no need to point out that you completed your degree online when applying for jobs. That said, should the issue come up during an interview, you should be honest about why an online option was the best decision for you. The quality and reputation of the school is more important than whether you attended physical classes or not.

Research their relationship with the Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.

Schools with regional accreditation are often better respected. That’s over those with just national accreditation. Some universities do not recognize degrees and credits from colleges that are just nationally accredited. Consider that fact if you plan to pursue a doctoral degree later on.

Types of Online Degrees and Programs

Earning an online master has become much more popular. Prospective students seek the flexibility and convenience that distance learning can provide.

There are a variety of online degrees and programs available. Each online learning experience caters to students with a wide range of interests and career goals.

For example, those interested in pursuing a career in human resource management may opt for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This could be in business administration with a concentration in HR.

Those interested in a more creative field may choose to study for an online program in graphic design or web development. No matter what your goals, there is a degree online that can help you achieve them.

Employers respect online instruction just as much as traditional learning. Now is the perfect time to pursue your education from home.

How Does an Online Degree Look on a Resume?

An online degree can look good on a resume, depending on the hiring practices. Some potential employers might not think an online degree is as credible as a degree earned from attending a brick-and-mortar institution. Many credible schools, including Indiana University, Southern New Hampshire University, Purdue University Global, and more all offer online degree programs.

However, employers are starting to see the value in online degrees as they become more and more common.

When it comes time to apply for jobs, having an online degree can be a huge part of getting your foot in the door with a potential employer. In many cases, an online degree can give you the same level of education and training as a traditional degree, making it a strong addition to your resume.

How Credible is an Online Master’s Degree?

Are online masters degrees credible?

The online education landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years.

So are online masters programs respected?

Generally speaking, an online degree is just as credible as a traditional degree. The key is to make sure that you choose an accredited online program from an accredited institution.

Of course, there are some advantages and disadvantages to getting an online master’s degree. One thing important to note is that you can study at your own pace and in your own time. This can be a great option for adults working full time who want to go back to school but can’t commit to attending classes full-time in a traditional classroom.

On the downside, you may miss out on some of the social aspects of traditional degrees. These include interacting with professors and other students in person.

Do People Look Down on Online Master’s?

There has been a recent boom in graduate students seeking online master’s degrees.

This is largely due to the flexibility and convenience that online programs offer.

However, there is a perception among some that online master’s degrees are not as respected as their traditional counterparts.

This could not be further from the truth. In reality, hiring practices have evolved. They now keep pace with the increasing popularity of online master’s degrees.

Many employers now place equal value on online and traditional degrees. In fact, some employers even prefer candidates with online degrees. They often have more experience working remotely and are comfortable with new technologies.

What Do Employers Think About Online Degrees?

Research shows that some employers view schools that are 100% virtual as “less rigorous.” This perception doesn’t always reflect reality. Most online students complete classes at the highest level possible, even compared to college graduates at a physical campus. This misconception of online degree holders may soon change.

Are online degrees respected? Let’s look at what the data says to see the level at which online master’s degrees respected.

A recent meta-analysis of multiple studies compared learning outcomes. These were from face-to-face classes with those from online classes had interesting results. It found that online students had a better understanding of class material at the end of online courses.

The report issued by the Department of Education attributed online learners’ better performances to a few specific traits:

Excellent time management

Self-motivation

Superior online communication skills.

Are Online Master’s Degrees Respected?

So are online universities respected? And is an online master’s degree worth it? Most online students and most employers would say yes. Even U.S. News & World Report says that these degree programs offer the highest level of education.

Some studies suggest that online programs are more difficult. That’s because they need more discipline. Most jobs use the Internet now. Mastering telecommunication is also a valuable skill. It can increase your value on the job market.

[Check out our ranking of the best Online Graduate Programs.]

Is an online masters respected? Yes, but be careful when you start looking at online offerings compared to traditional on campus degree programs.

Be wary of “diploma mills.” These schools claim to issue master’s degrees based just on work experience. Some companies will send you a certificate that looks like a real diploma. This is often in exchange for your faxed resume and a large sum of money. Many don’t offer the highest level of education for these master’s programs earned online.

Some reputable colleges award limited course credit based on professional experience. A legitimate degree always has classwork.

So is an online degree respected? It all comes down to which program and school you choose.

If you choose a program that challenges you and prepares you to thrive in your field, employers will see that. They will not be so concerned with how you got your degree.

According to a recent study, more and more students are choosing to earn their degrees online.

In fact, over six million students were taking at least one online course in 2017, an increase of almost three million from just five years earlier.

Many online programs offer courses at the same level as those offered at brick-and-mortar schools. These include graduate-level courses. With so many advantages, it’s no wonder that online education is on the rise.

Second, highlight the skills that you have acquired through your online degree programs. A prospective employer will value the self-discipline and time-management skills that are necessary for successful online learning. Be sure to emphasize these skills in both your resume and cover letter.

Finally, take advantage of the many networking opportunities available through online education forums and social media platforms. These platforms can be a great way to connect with potential employers and learn about new job openings. By using these tools effectively, you can increase your chances of landing your dream job.

Good News

Online learning is becoming the new normal. In 2015, over a quarter (28%) of all students participated in at least one online learning course. As the number of online students, degree programs, and schools offering online options continues to increase, employers are seeing that this trend is not going away. These employers are also seeing that the quality of an education is not diminished by being imparted partially or even solely online. Any reservations an employer may have can be assuaged by picking a reputable, appropriately accredited school.

The Importance of Choosing Your School

Because reputation and accreditation are so important in picking a college or university’s online program, make sure you do your research. Unfortunately, there are degree mills and accreditation mills that appear credible, so it is very important to check with The U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to learn the accrediting entity for your chosen field of study. Another safeguard is picking a school that is regionally accredited and has an actual campus. If it sounds too good to be true–being granted a higher education degree based on previous work or life experience for a lump sum “tuition” and not having to take actual classes–chances are it isn’t legitimate.

What Will Employers Think of Your Online Degree?

Even though traditional colleges have been educating students for centuries and online learning is still somewhat nascent, if your online degree is from a reputable, regionally-accredited college that also has a physical campus, chances are your future employer will be more concerned with your accomplishments and work history than from where you have received your master’s degree. And even if there are some old-school employers out there who are still unfamiliar with online degrees, that will probably cease to be the case in the very near future. More and more employers are becoming aware of and interacting with graduates of online learning programs, and most state that they find the degrees just as credible as traditional degrees if the online program is recognized as being from a quality, accredited, established school. Thankfully, many of the most popular online master’s degree programs are now widely available from reputable schools. So rest assured, if you choose to obtain your master’s degree online, your prospects with employers should be bright as your future.

Civil engineering is responsible for the design and construction of the things that create a safe environment enabling civilization to be civilized. Designing and overseeing the building of structures for shelter, roads and bridges for transportation, sewage treatment to access clean water—these are the creations of civil engineering. Understandably, civil engineering is an important profession for the functioning of humankind as a society of people (in fact, the master of civil engineering degree is currently one of the most popular online master’s degree programs that professionals pursue as an online degree). Historically, when did civil engineering begin? We’ll examine some of the history of civil engineering and we’ll even provide information on how you, our humble reader, can pursue this popular degree.

From the earliest civilized times, humans have needed to design ways to make sure they had access to food, clean water, other communities and necessities for survival. Where would we be if the first civil engineer had not moved out of a cave to build a structure to shelter their family, or carved out a path to walk to the stream to get water, or ceased to be nomads and formed a fixed community with other humans? Well, we might be back in time before Ancient Egypt exploded and created an infrastructure that helped civilization take a quantum leap forward in terms of living and thriving as a society.

First let’s look back at some of the most significant early engineers and engineering feats. Possibly the first engineer, Imhotep (born sometime in the 27th century Before Common Era) of Egypt, is often credited with designing a step pyramid during the reign of King Djoser (pharaoh from 2630–2611 BCE). Utilizing a architecture method of stacking stone columns to provide support to buildings, his creation still stands today. Jump forward about 1000 years, and you have the beginnings of the techniques used to build the Great Wall of China. The earliest walls were constructed using rammed earth, which involved molding dirt, gravel, and other bits of moistened earth together with a stabilizer and jamming the mixture into a mold. Through the centuries the engineering methods improved greatly, and items like stones and bricks were used to produce a more stable, durable structure–hence the construction of the Great Wall of China. Looking closer towards the beginning of the Common Era (CE), we find the famous Roman aqueducts. These water ways were regulated by the government–the land on which an aqueduct was going to be constructed first had to be carefully surveyed for instance, and the materials used to build the aqueduct itself had to meet certain standards. Much like civil engineering of today, rules and codes had to be followed in order to safely, legally, and sustainably construct these important elements of the Roman infrastructure. The first time in recorded history that the actual term “civil engineering” was used was in the 1700s in order to differentiate civilian design and construction from all military engineering. John Smeaton (1724-1792 CE) was the first person to call themselves a civil engineer, and the first private institution of higher education in the United State to teach civil engineering was Norwich University, and a catalogue dating back to 1821 listed coursework in “Civil Engineering, including the construction of roads, canals, locks and bridges.”

If you want to join this long history of making life better for humankind, and you already have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, pursuing your online master’s degree couldn’t be easier. Look at this list of the 50 best online master of civil engineering degrees in order to start your search for the perfect school.

The job market is certainly better than it was just a few years ago, but it never hurts to make sure you’re at the top of your game and ready for any uncertainty in the labor market. Earning a master’s degree online may be your best bet for safeguarding your future employment. If managerial positions or jobs in certain fields are what you aspire to, a master’s degree might actually be a requirement to reach them. A master’s degree may seem like an insurmountable challenge. With the many popular online master’s degree programs available today, a master’s degree may be easier to obtain than you think. But, is online grad school worth it?

The Ease of an Online Master’s Degree Program

From the beginning of your online education journey, online master degree programs offer multiple ways of applying for admission. Many have several admissions deadlines throughout the year. Some even offer rolling admission so that you can get started as soon as you are ready rather than having to wait for the school year to start. There are some programs that require a certain amount of time on campus for residencies or week-long projects, so make sure that fits into your plan. For many online programs, all you need is a computer and the self-motivation and dedication to work hard. Online learning can be in your reach!

Most online programs are designed for the working professional with a full time job, so you can take the time you need to complete the program. In our research we learned of programs that allow up to seven years to complete a degree. That’s not always the case, of course, but many programs will accommodate those who are still working by making part time coursework an option. And on the flip-side of taking several years or more to work on your degree, if getting in and out of a program as quickly as possible is your goal–there are programs that make that an attractive option as well. Some of the fastest online master’s programs take less than a year to complete, and other online master’s degrees allow up to seven years. There is surely an online program that meets your needs.

The Benefits of an Online Master’s Degree Program

There’s no need to fear that educational quality is sacrificed through online learning. Most online degrees have the exact same faculty teaching both on-campus and online courses. Lectures are often archived and available at all times to the online student. Support services, even though students are not on-campus, are also available to online students if they desire to access them. So you can be assured that you are learning the same materials and being offered the same support as those on campus.

After you’ve graduated, another bonus of earning an online master’s degree is that a salary increase is likely in certain fields. Some salaries jump over 20% by virtue of having furthered your education! There are studies that verify the direct relation of higher wages in certain careers from earning a master’s degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows those with a master’s degree earn around $1574 weekly while those with a bachelor’s degree earn an average of $1334.

That’s not the only reason an online degree is worthwhile. Many stimulating employment opportunities open up to graduates with advanced degrees. Graduates with a master’s degree find positions in management and administration more accessible, and having an advanced degree allows more specialized focus areas in fields such as teaching, the arts or healthcare, just to name a few.

What are the Top Online Masters Degrees?

Whereas careers in medicine are pretty straight-forward and well-known, jobs in the field of public health are broad and very diverse. Just as with medical jobs, public health careers can be local, far-reaching, small-town rural, or big city and metropolitan. Public health professionals can work with non-profits and governments to create and advocate for policies and social change. They can conduct research within universities or medical facilities. Professionals with their Master of Public Health (MPH) degree can even work out in the field, whether in response to environmental and epidemiological disasters or in providing education to communities and their local leaders. And the outlook for working in this field is very good–the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics predicts a much faster than average growth in the next decade for this field for professionals with advanced public health training. To take advantage of these jobs and the expected growth, look into the best online master of public health degree programs for that educational and professional edge, and continue reading to get a sense of just some of the meaningful careers possible with an MPH degree.

If management, leadership, and organizational abilities are strengths in your skill-set, consider pursuing a job as a Medical or Health Care Service Manager. In this capacity, MPH professionals manage entire sites or specific specialized facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, or medical practices, for example). As a manager, responsibility for keeping up-to-date on the latest federal and state laws and health regulations would fall under your realm. In addition, keeping up with the latest technology and research would be critical. With the goal of making sure the patients and clients served by your organization get the best possible care, and that all employees are following best (and all required regulatory) practices, a lot falls on the shoulders of the Health Care Service Managers. As our population ages, these positions will be in more demand in the next decades.

MPH professionals who like to conduct research can choose epidemiology as their career path. Looking at the causes of diseases and increased systemic, exhibited injuries, epidemiologists are concerned with the health of the collective human population and perform clinical trials and research to come to and support their findings. The outcomes of an epidemiologist’s research can lead to policy change and laws to protect populations. Likened to the detectives of the public health field, epidemiologists can work under pressure during outbreaks and epidemics, or can work methodically on established and known diseases.

Community Health Workers and Educators work on the ground with individuals and communities. With the objective of informing populations of ways to combat and prevent disease and injury, health workers also conduct research to find the best strategies for avoiding health concerns. It is important for health workers and educators to be knowledgeable about and trusted by the community they serve.

These are just a small sampling of the careers possible with an MPH degree. Whichever path you choose, concern for the health and well-being of the human race will lead to a better life for many.

How hard is a master’s degree? And is grad school harder than undergrad?

The short answer is this: it depends.

In general, master’s degree programs are more difficult than undergraduate programs. That’s because they build on existing concepts and skills.

When you’re going for your bachelor’s degree, you spend your time reviewing what other people have discovered. As a graduate student, you spend your time making discoveries of your own.

So is getting a master’s degree hard? Only you can be the judge of that. We’ll walk you through the various aspects of masters degree difficulty in this post.

How Hard is a Master’s Degree?

How hard is it to get a masters degree? This depends on a variety of factors.

Full Time vs. Part Time Study

How hard is a masters degree? Much of this depends on the major as well as the type of degree program and how long you want to take to earn your degree.

Some vocational training programs last as little as a few months. Most masters degrees take a few years of work. You may be able to complete an accelerated program in just one year of full time study. However, this will require more work and may prove to be more difficult.

Program Format

No two master’s degrees are exactly alike. There are lots of reasons to pursue another degree. You might get a higher salary. You could be considered an expert in your field. You’ll get to conduct original research.

Consider your purpose and motivation. This will help you choose the program format that’s right for you. Here are some of the most common.

Thesis Program

A thesis program is the most difficult kind of graduate degree. It is similar to a doctoral dissertation. In fact, a thesis program is, for many students, the predecessor to a Ph.D. candidature. You will take fewer courses in a thesis program. However, current readers’ lists will be long. You will be expected to participate 100% in class discussions. There’s also a lot of original research and writing to be done.

Nonthesis Program

By contrast, a nonthesis program is easier. You don’t have to write a thesis. You can enjoy a more concentrated learning environment. Class sizes tend to be smaller. You may have to complete regular tests. There will also be a long reader’s list. The curriculum is far less intense and is for students who plan to enter directly into the workforce.

Co-Ops and Internships

Co-ops and internships can often be completed as part of a thesis or nonthesis program. You will be able to get real-world experience in your program of study. You can read, write, and complete essays and tests. You may also complete field experience logs.

It might be less difficult in the traditional sense. The classroom work is far less taxing. However, the biggest challenge will be to find success in your hands-on experiences.

Academic Major

There are all kinds of career options out there for graduates. However, you’ll need to make sure you choose the right master’s degree major for your career goals.

Is a master’s degree hard? That depends on what your major is and how dedicated you are to your studies in that area. If you are majoring in physics and you hate the sciences, you’ll probably find the program to be much more challenging.

Is it your first degree? If you have another master’s degree in another area, earning a second might not be as challenging. You’re just used to how graduate study works.

While the difficulty of a degree will mostly depend on your own skills and aptitudes, there are some majors that are notorious for being more difficult. These include:

Engineering

Business

Physical sciences

Architecture

Cellular and molecular biology

Economics

Medicine, nursing, or pharmacy

Quantum mechanics

By contrast, the easiest master’s majors are:

Education

Organizational leadership

Criminal justice

Accounting

Communication

Psychology

Sports management

Applied computer science

Healthcare administration

Again, this is all subjective. Choose a major that will help you meet your career goals. At the same time, remember that some classes are naturally going to be harder than others.

Time Management Skills

Are masters degrees hard? That depends – how good are you at managing your time?

Completing a degree requires a lot of grueling work. You will need to attend classes. Go to internships. Write papers. Completing an undergraduate degree is also challenging, but on a different level.

The good news is that the demands of a master’s degree are easy enough to handle if you already have strong time management skills. If you have a bachelor’s degree, that’s half the battle right there.

If you can, try to get better at managing your calendar. Work on limiting distractions. Don’t overschedule yourself. The more adept you can become at managing your time before starting a master’s degree, the better.

Life Commitments

If you’re already working a regular job, then you might find that earning a degree is challenging. That’s just due to the fact that you’re now juggling additional commitments.

If you have a family or any other personal obligations, then this kind of program might be even more challenging. Recent graduates who go right from undergraduate school into a master’s degree may find that earning a postgraduate degree is easier than those who do not. That’s simply because they’re already used to the demands of college learning and haven’t had a break. They are also less likely to be working a full time job and can 100% commit to your studies.

On-Campus vs. Online Study

How hard is a masters degree? That depends on the format and your scheduling needs.

Would you prefer to study on campus or online? Online programs tend to be easier than those offered in the traditional format on campus. You will have the flexibility to attend classes when it’s most convenient for you.

However, there is a trade off. While you will have more scheduling freedom, you may not get as much attention from your instructors when studying online. You may have questions getting answers to your questions or understanding assignments. Postgraduate study online has its benefits and disadvantages.

Competitiveness of Graduate School

How hard is a masters degree? One final factor to consider is the program to which you’re applying. Some grad schools are just more difficult to get into.

The most competitive grad schools are found at schools such as:

University of Pennsylvania

Columbia University

Duke University

Harvard University

Northwestern University

Stanford University

Vanderbilt University

Washington University in St. Louis

Yale University

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are the least selective schools. The schools with the highest acceptance rates include:

Loyola University Chicago

St. John’s University

Simmons College

University of San Francisco

Golden Gate University

Regis University

Bob Jones University

Boston Architectural College

You should not let the competitiveness or selectivity of a college get in your way of submitting an application. If a program interests you, apply! Just know that the more selective a program is, the harder the program will likely be.

Is Grad School Easier Than Undergrad?

How hard is graduate school compared to undergraduate – and is a master’s degree program harder than a bachelor’s degree program?

Here, we’ll explain how hard is it to get a master’s degree. We will do this by comparing the requirements of an undergraduate degree versus a postgraduate course of study.

More Studying and Greater Intensity

It’s more common for graduate students to labor year-round at their academics. They often conduct research or serve as teaching assistants during the summer rather than taking off significant lengths of time.

In many bachelor’s courses, students can just show up. They listen to lectures. They take notes. They submit papers and take quizzes and exams. The average graduate class, on the other hand, has fewer students. Everyone is expected to engage in course discussions.

Master’s degrees, even those in the same subject, require much more independent study. Completing this kind of program is a much more substantial task. Graduate schools expect students expect grad students to be more invested in their future career. They don’t extend any kind of safety net or support system. It’s up to you to succeed.

Postgraduate educators seldom offer lifelines to their students. Professors will often grant undergraduates paper deadline extensions. They remind their classes of upcoming test dates. Those courtesies are uncommon at the master’s degree level.

Researching at the Highest Level for a Master’s Degree

Master’s courses ask students to do some hard work in the form of research in their chosen field.

Undergraduate courses often include research tasks. Professors will often guide them through the process. They go over ethics and strategies along the way.

Graduate students, on the other hand, must design sophisticated and detailed research projects on their own. While faculty are often found working with graduate students for this research, they don’t lend as much support. Even non thesis programs need quite a lot of hands-on research.

Research at the graduate level must be original. In fact, students often must come up with new knowledge to their fields of study. Plus, as a postgraduate, you’ll need to present the results of your research to a group of faculty members. You’ll have to answer all of their questions. Their assessments of your work could determine whether or not you receive your diploma. You might end up publishing your research, too.

Student Life and Extended Support for Undergrads

Graduate students often need time to get acclimated to their new social situations at school. Undergraduates live, eat, and study with people their age. They’re able to attend many parties and other functions. Those events help to decrease stress. Plus, friends can support one another during challenging times.

However, many post-grads live off-campus. They have academic schedules and jobs that keep them busy. They must devote much of their weekly routine to studying in the library. Their classmates tend to be people of all ages. They don’t have resident assistants and others to organize activities for them. Some graduate students find that their social lives are curtailed. That scenario can be taxing at times.

Should I Get a Master’s Degree? In Most Cases, Yes.

Ask yourself the following questions if you are thinking about going for a master’s degree:

Do you want a higher salary?

Will a master’s degree in your chosen field qualify you for a higher salary (according to the BLS, it doesn’t for all fields)?

Are you interested in a promotion?

Is a master’s necessary as a basic qualification to work in your field (such as education)?

Do you want a challenge?

Are you interested in staying up to date with developments in your field?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you may want to consider graduate study. Yes, even if it’s challenging!

How hard is a masters degree? Depending on the factors listed above, it can be extremely difficult. But is it worth it?

Definitely.

According to the National Student Clearinghouse, you can make up to 87% more money. As more people get undergraduate degrees, their value continues to dip. But the value of a master’s continues to rise.

These postgraduate degrees can be challenging. However, you’ll earn more money and qualify for more jobs if you choose to pursue one. Don’t forget the automatic respect and credibility that goes along with a master’s degree, either!

Is A Master’s Degree Hard?

So are master’s degrees hard? Yes. Master’s degrees are a bit harder than most undergraduate studies. However, a postgraduate course of study is the best way to improve your academic career and personal life. You’ll find ways to adjust to the increased difficulty as you go.

Try not to be discouraged by any of the above points. Sure, postgraduate study has its challenges. Yet many students believe it is thrilling, both at the intellectual and professional level. Master’s degree candidates often develop warm and lasting relationships with their professors and classmates. Of course, postgraduate study is often the only gateway to a lucrative and rewarding career.

How would you like to join an amazing, timely profession that has an expected job growth rate of 33% over the next decade? This percentage translates into almost 22 million new jobs by 2027, which is well over the national job growth rate average of just 7%. If this statistic piques your interest, then you should look into Project Management. These facts and figures are according to the gold standard of all things project management, the Project Management Institute (PMI). The PMI is the non-profit organization that provides (among other things) well-known and respected industry standards, resources, trainings, degree program accreditation, and issues credentials to Project Management Professionals (PMP). In an analysis conducted by the Anderson Economic Group (AEG), this extremely positive information became evident and was published in the spring of 2017. Appointed by the PMI, the AEG was contracted to conduct the research, and the PMI shared the report to show the great promise for the field of Project Management both nationally and internationally.

Several things are contributing to the growth. One of the key factors is timing–the PMI was started in the late 1960s, and many who joined the profession at that time are aging into retirement, leading to a “talent gap.” This gap is opening the way for positions to be filled by up-and-comers, many of whom are new to the profession. Another factor is the recognition in several sectors—business, non-profit, and government, for example—that having an employee or employees to initiate projects and see them to their successful resolution is advantageous in many ways. It makes good sense organizationally to have a team or individual trained in such skills as risk management, organizational and interpersonal behavior, and project planning, implementation and execution. These project management professionals essentially make sure projects are completed successfully, on time, and within the projected budget—all the elements of a project that make CEOs and Executive Directors happy.

Projected salaries should also serve enticing to individuals considering the profession. Starting Project Manager salaries can be as high as just under $100,000 a year. Additionally, professionals who pursue a master’s degree in project management as well as their PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) credentials can expect salary increases of nearly 25% over their peers without the credentials—jumping from $92,000 to a healthy and impressive $113,000. Many online Project Management degree programs are aligned with the PMI’s PMBOK® Guide (The Project Management Body of Knowledge) standards to assure students are prepared to successfully sit for the PMI certification exam that will lead to their PMP credentials. Prospective graduate degree students do not need to uproot their lives to pursue the degree that can open the doors to these jobs and salaries–they just need to choose a school from some of the best online master’s in project management degree programs currently available. It’s a great way to attain a reputable, relevant and advancing degree while maintaining your current job and life.
The short answer is: yes you can! Many of the best online master of education degree programs offer an alternative route to certification or other teaching options for students who did not major in education as undergraduates. Continue reading to find the path that works for you.

For those seeking certification, there are a couple of programmatic options. The Alternative Master’s Program (AMP) trains students to become teachers in the field in which they already hold a bachelor’s degree and leads to Class A Teacher Certification in the student’s specific field and a Masters degree. The AMP is offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at the School of Education (SOE) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This program requires 49-58 credit hours to graduate and is partially-online. Students focus on pedagogy and curriculum development, and must participate in a mentored student teaching internship. Other programs, like the one at the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Education at the New York Institute of Technology, offer education degree programs that require additional credits for students seeking initial licensing. The NYIT program is specifically for those who desire a career change and have no previous experience in teaching. Students complete 45 credit hours in this Master of Science degree program in elementary childhood education, and gain experience through supervision and a “professional student teaching sequence.”

For students who want to teach in outside-of-the-box ways, there are excellent programs to choose from as well. Not everyone is drawn to childhood education. If teaching adults is more your cup of tea, the Master of Arts in Adult Education at the University of South Florida’s College of Education should be of interest. For those interested in teaching adults in many different formats and venues, this program does not lead to certification. Rather, graduates of this 36 credit hour program focus on preparing to teach “adult learners” in “non-school based working environments” by taking courses in such topics as educational research and methods of teaching adults. For those who want to teach children but don’t see themselves in a traditional classroom setting, there are non-certification seeking degree programs that will prepare graduates to become global educators or work in community centers, such as the Elementary Education Master of Science degree at the College of Education at Auburn University. Or if you seek something even more unorthodox, look to Purdue University‘s Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology, which trains instructors towards “systemic design, development, implementation, and assessment of the teaching and learning process, with a goal to promote more effective learning” in a wide variety of settings.

The good news is that there are many ways to become a teacher with a good, solid online master degree program. Each state has different regulations for those do seek certification, so be sure to check out the requirements, but otherwise–your future as an educator is wide open!

Graduate School Can Benefit You Down the Road: MS or MA

First, know that getting an advanced degree offers many benefits. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree. It’s no different than when you are choosing a bachelor’s degree. Going to graduate school allows you to develop and refine advanced skills.

Most schools will provide you with a higher level of knowledge. Master’s degree programs are designed to focus on a particular specialty. The result of this is an expanded skillset as it pertains to your chosen area of study. Eventually, it also relates to the career you choose to pursue.

A higher median salary and more job opportunities aren’t the only reasons to earn a master’s. Earning a master’s degree is the first step toward a lucrative future.

Earning a master’s degree is the right choice to show employers that you care. A master’s degree shows that you are dedicated to your profession, whether that’s in arts programs or science degrees.

A graduate degree isn’t a guarantee of employment. It is, however, a showcase of your professional interests. Pursue a master’s degree program to:

Show you understand advanced technical fields

Have hands-on experience in a particular subject

Are personally interested in an area

Gain a leadership program

Gain career advancement opportunities

Show that you are invested in the liberal arts

Master’s programs can provide you with the knowledge you need to qualify for a career change. You can also hone your research skills. Of course, an MS or MA degree is also a great way to get the credit hours you need for an eventual doctoral degree.

More Job Opportunities

You may find that having a graduate degree qualifies you for more jobs. This means that you will have a larger pool of careers to choose from.

To practice as a school counselor, you must have at least a master’s degree. By getting your graduate degree, you can pursue a new career. It might be a higher paying one, too.

Higher Income Potential

The more educated you are, the more money you can make. There are some exceptions to this rule. Yet you can be confident that getting a master’s degree will benefit you down the road.

How much more you can earn depends on a lot of factors. It’s not just your level of education. Continuing your education and getting master’s degree certainly doesn’t hurt!

Job Security

Once you have earned a master’s degree, you may earn job security. You may be more relevant in the workforce. The skills and advanced knowledge with an MA or an MS may be just what is needed to stay competitive in your job industry.

What MA Programs Are Most in Demand?

Arts students tend to get a bad rap. However, there are many in-demand MA programs. These command high salaries and are quite lucrative. Popular areas include:

Business degrees

Education degrees

Health professions degrees

Communication programs

English and creative writing

History

Mental health counseling

Marketing degrees

The social sciences is always a good discipline to consider for graduate study, too.

The Differences Between Master Of Science And Master Of Arts Degrees

There are three main areas where these two types of degrees differ. The main difference areas should always be top considerations when choosing your focus.

Thesis

You may have heard about the painstaking process of writing a thesis for a master’s degree. It often includes months of extensive research in a library or lab work. This process can be very rewarding and a desirable challenge. However, it is typically only present in master of science graduate programs. Master of arts graduate programs usually do not require a thesis and extensive research.

Focus

The two master’s degrees differ based on focus. A master of arts degree program focuses on the liberal arts. These include:

Languages

Writing

Composing music and other fine arts

Communications

English

Teaching

Master of science programs focus on the sciences. These include:

Chemistry

Mathematics

Public health

Technology

Computer science

Engineering

There are other kinds of programs besides MS and MA degrees, too. For example, a master of business administration is a popular choice.

See Also: 10 Best Masters Degrees in Computer Engineering

Time

The majority of all master of arts degree programs last about two years for full-time students. Master of science degree programs can take longer to complete. Master of arts degree options take less time. This type of degree tends to be more basic.

Many of these graduate degrees have additional requirements such as lab work and extensive research. An example is the thesis option discussed above. The thesis option is also something required by many doctoral programs.

Master of arts degree programs usually have other requirements. Students may work as interns or do fieldwork. This is instead of completing large amounts of scientific research or working on an extended final project. Students pursuing a master of science degree should plan on spending more than two years in school. Master of arts students usually spend two years or less studying.

This is not a hard and fast rule. In some cases, a Master of Arts degree takes longer. It might also require a thesis. You can find non-thesis MS degree programs, too. Your specific experience will depend on your particular degree and the school you attend.

With both degrees, you’ll get good preparation for pursuing a doctorate degree. If you get a doctoral degree after you get your graduate degree, you can expect to spend another 3-5 years in school.

Which Degree Option is Better?

No degree type is universally better than the other. Some employers analyze an applicant’s education history for a job in a field that is based on arts and sciences. When they do this, they are not concerned about whether it’s a master of science degree or arts degree. The better choice for you? Whichever program offers more for a student’s desired career path.

Prospective students who desire technical careers benefit most from a master of science degree. Conversely, prospective students who prefer a career related to arts and humanities benefit from a master of arts degree program.

Think carefully about a career path. Weigh the benefits of a specific degree before enrolling. It is best to choose a degree program and major that provides a wider range of career options. By doing this, you can branch off into another related career path later, if you change your mind.

For example, if you choose a master of science degree in management, you may have more opportunities than if you choose one in applied economics. Management degrees would likely be considered by a wider range of companies.

One other factor relates to international students. International students may have an easier time with the visa application to study in the United States for MS degrees versus MAs. This is because a particular program that’s an MS might be STEM-designated.

Many employers consider master’s degrees in similar fields to the ones they list as job requirements. A degree is an asset and also an investment. Always treat the process of choosing master’s degrees with the care it deserves.

Both types of graduate studies can be rewarding. Either degree type will allow you to gain a theoretical understanding of your discipline. Either one will allow you to choose elective courses that interest you. And either one will lead to a successful career. Choose wisely and consider your career goals. No two degrees are alike and there are plenty of degree options for graduate study out there!
