online masters in english

In a culture of email, text and emojis, one may think that the English language is endangered.  The once honorable degree in English appears obsolete in a world of LOL, IKR and CUL8R, yet the truth is that opportunities for English degree-holders are even more prevalent than before in our ever-changing culture and environment.  According to Forbes, the explosion of technology has increased the availability of career possibilities for English majors. Three areas of specific opportunities for Master’s of English degree candidates include corporate communications, digital content and education.

The business world still relies on clear communication within and without the corporate structure.  Communications directors and public relations directors are positions where English majors can succeed and provide a vital service to their employer.  Many internal corporate support positions can be handled by English majors.

Digital content, including technical writing, journalism and marketing is a newer area open to English majors.  Technical writers offer a translation service (tech-speak to English) and provide detailed instruction for users of all stripes.  While print media may be shrinking in terms of physical words on paper, every major provider of news and information hosts a website with written content; the need for print journalists never declined, only the need for typesetters!  In the world of marketing, English majors ensure that information produced is accurate, grammatically correct and flows in a way to enhance the subject matter. This is valuable to all business services and products.

With the expansion of the global economy and transition of people from one country to another, instructors in English – particularly as a second language – is in high demand.  English education has always been a need; today, it has expanded its application to a wider audience who did not grow up speaking the language.
